feeding the river

“Feeding the River” by Christen Mattix

Today I knit from 10:50 – 11:50.  For every driver that barreled through the intersection of 16th and Taylor, there was a driver who slowed down and made contact.  A mother and daughter drove past smiling and waving.  A man in a truck honked and nodded.  I felt buoyant today…It had something to do with wearing yellow.  I feel so cheerful in yellow,  like a human daffodil.  The Quiet Man came by, and stopped to chat.  I will thenceforth no longer call him The Quiet Man…From now on, he is The Urban Hiker, because he walks 10 miles every day, in all weather conditions.  He said that the forecast is sunshine for the next 4 days.  If you live anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, you know that these golden days are sheer gift.

P.S. I titled this painting while thinking about this quote by dancer and choreographer, Martha Graham:

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open…”
